Kids are asked all the time, “What do you want to be when you grow up?”, but are rarely given much hands-on experience or opportunities to see what their options are.
We’ve established ‘Career Path’ field trips to help expose our kids to a wide variety of careers in diverse fields. Generally, these field trips consist of a talk by the guest speaker about their decision-making process, likes and aptitudes, schooling, and specialized schooling (if applicable), and about their jobs (what they do). The students are allowed to ask questions, and get more information about the industry. After the discussion session, the students usually tour the facility.
Some of the areas we’ve covered include the arts (tattoo artist); medical field (dentist, dental hygienist, chiropractor), sciences (STEM careers with Space Center Houston) and animal care (veterinarian). We’ll be continuing to offer career path field trips during the 2014-2015 school year in the medical field (nursing – RN and LVN), science (botanist and engineering with Lamar University) and talking to a museum curator.
We are always on the lookout for interesting careers in our area. If you would like to talk to our students about your career, please contact us.
