Homeschool Book Club – Bmt. Main Library

If you missed out on the first Homeschoolers’ Book Club this past Tuesday, then you definitely want to mark your calendar for the next book club discussions. This was out first time to participate and we really enjoyed it!

We met with Librarienne-Extarordinaire* Robin Smith at the Beaumont Main Library downtown. There were about 9 kids there between the ages of 7 and 12 and both genders were pretty evenly represented. It was really interesting seeing the children participate.

The moms were subtly and politely encouraged to stay out of the discussions, which really let the kids explore their own ideas about the stories they’d read or heard for the first chat. I’m sure they will have even more to share once they settle into a routine as the months pass.

If you want to participate, it’s not too late! The schedule will be:

Oct.  12   Too Much Noise by Anne McGovern
Nov.  9   Voyage of the Dawn Treader by C. S. Lewis
Dec.  14  Cricket in Times Square by George Selden
Jan.   11  That Book Woman by Heather Henson
Feb.   8  Later Gator by Laurence Yep
Mar.   8 There’s an Owl in the Shower by Jean Craighead George
Apr.   12  Mr. Poppers Penguins by Richard Atwater
May   10  Mudshark by Gary Paulsen

Of course, you can check these books out from the library, but if buying is more your style then each of those links will take you to either or Barnes & to buy them. Some are rather hard to find, but since the children voted on these choices, I am confident that they’ll enjoy them.

If you have any questions, you can reach Ms. Robin at the Beaumont Main Library via phone at (409) 838-6606. We hope to see you there!

*Yes, we know this is not a ‘real word’. It’s awesome though, don’t you think? With all the work that Ms. Robin does for kids in our area, we decided that ‘Librarian’ simply isn’t the best descriptor and have bestowed this new title upon her. Feel free to adopt it into your own vocab 😉
